About Gala Records
Gala Records is owned and operated by Jean-Pierre Sévigny in Brossard, near Montreal, Quebec, Canada. The company was founded in 2005 with the aim of preserving and sharing Canadian musical and oral heritages on digitally remastered media, together with extensive liner notes, essays, discographies, and rare graphics in attractive and affordable packages. We aim to put history (events, words and music) on recordings. Each recording project, usually conceived on the idea of a theme,  a topic or a period is thoroughly prepared, researched and produced by a team of dedicated music historians and sound technicians.

Gala Records focuses on musical and oral heritages that are now neglected by the music industry and a media-driven culture obsessed with the latest fad.  Our post-modern, hyper-technological environment tends to pulverize into oblivion everything that happened before its advent. Musical genres, artists and cultural movements are obliterated.

Gala’s primary tool is the historical sound ‘’anthology’’. This type of recording is largely misunderstood. True anthologies are in no way related to reissues, compilations, ‘bests of’ or ‘greatest hits’ type packages. Anthologies are knowledge-based products which include in-depth research, interviews, testimonials, rare and unreleased material, etc. Oral history is also used to contextualize the music, and explore its background and cultural environment. Music comes from somewhere besides the studio, touring, airplay and media exposure, and this is where we seek to go when we do our anthologies. We take interest in the history, the story behind the music.

With the help of musicologists, historians and researchers, Gala documents and revisits our musical heritages. Gala produces and reissues great works of our discography, restores them with the help of the best sound engineers and keeps them on the market for the enjoyment of all.

Gala has been acclaimed as a premier label in the field of Canadiana , sound heritage and historical recordings.  In 2006, our very first recording  Diva - Alys Robi and Lucio Agostini  Gal-101, was nominated at ADISQ ( the French-Canadian record industry association) in the category ‘anthology of the year’, and again, in 2009, our recording  L’ultime rock progressif du Québec  Gal-113 was also nominated in the same category.

À propos de Disques Gala

Jean-Pierre Sévigny est le président et directeur de Disques Gala. L’étiquette Gala a été fondée en 2005 dans le but de préserver, diffuser et partager le patrimoine sonore canadien. Ce patrimoine  est ‘remasterisé’ sur média digital et est accompagné de livrets bien documentés, entrevues, essais, discographies et éléments visuels, le tout offert dans des produits attrayants et économiques. Nous mettons l’histoire (évènements, mots, musiques) sur disque. Chaque projet discographique est confié à des spécialistes et des techniciens chevronnés.   

La maison de disque Gala met l’accent sur les héritages musicaux négligés par l’industrie de la musique. Malheureusement des musiques, des artistes et des mouvements entiers sont oblitérés de l’histoire et de la mémoire collective. 

L’outil privilégié par Disques Gala est l’anthologie sonore. Ce type de production discographique, souvent mal compris,  n’a rien à voir avec toutes les rééditions, compilations, ‘best of’ et ‘grands succès’ de toutes sortes, ces produits purement commerciaux qui pullulent sur le marché. L’anthologie propose un ensemble documentaire (mots, images, entrevues, histoire orale, etc.) qui permet de mieux saisir et apprécier le pouls, l’esprit d'une époque et de son patrimoine sonore. Les sons (musique et histoire orale) de l’ère acoustique, électrique et magnétique sont au cœur de nos préoccupations.

Les disques de Gala ont fait l’objet de critiques élogieuses.  De plus, en 2006, notre tout premier disque  Diva – Alys Robi et Lucio Agostini Gal-101  a obtenu une nomination dans la catégorie ‘anthologie de l’année’ et, en 2009, l’album  L’ultime rock progressif du Québec Gal-113  a obtenu lui aussi une nomination dans la même catégorie.
